Andrew Wyeth has always been a favorite. I look at his work when I want to be renewed. He was a master of technique, but he said technique isn't enough...there has to be purpose and meaning way beyond that. That is true of the other three artists in the post as well.

I had never seen the Wyeth or Tanguy works before, and I thought I was familiar with everything they had done. They're particularly deep works--way beyond technique, of which both were masters. I had profiled Katie Miller and Cassie Taggert for my column ten years ago, so I was familiar with their work. All four, if not equally known, go beyond the surface and explore other dimensions.
